Audience Research Questionnaire

Initially, we brainstormed ideas for narrative to be about a runaway teenager who is driven away by her parents and best friend. This question was further established, by the audience, the idea of a runway narrative. The second most popular answer for the preferred narrative is following the life of a teenager. As we were discussing our ideas, we decided to stay away from this narrative, as we thought it was too cliche for the Coming of Age genre. Similarly, we agreed that the death of a loved one would be too easy and cliche for our short film.

Even though our target audience prefers a resolved ending, after careful discussion and consideration, we have decided upon an open ended ending, as it leaves the audience hooked and provokes questions. It also allows the audience to gather their own interpretations about what happens next.

As the narrative for a Coming of Age film can easily be cliche, we took a while longer to work on a simple, yet effective narrative that would hook an active audience. Similarly, we also intend on making the editing of our film unique, by adding interesting elements and using a more fragmented style of editing. In terms of acting, we are still searching for the right actress that fits the description of our protagonist, as we want the acting to be on point.

In this question, it is evident that the audience prefer a relatable, yet rebellious protagonist. As our film is of the Coming of Age genre, we have agreed that these will be the two dominant traits we see in our protagonist. The least voted trait is over the top. This was predicted, as we did not want the protagonist to be over exaggerating the simple narrative.

As mentioned in the earlier questions, the narrative for our genre can be easily be a cliche. We are currently putting in careful thought and consideration into making our narrative simple, yet effective. In addition to a strong narrative, we are also looking to make our film unique by the use of mise en scene. We will be experimenting with different costumes, as well as props to see which ones work well together. Even though acting was voted the least times out of the 5 components, we are still looking for someone with good acting skills, so that all 5 components work in harmony together.

As predicted, we will be focusing more on the visual and aesthetic aspects of the film. We are planning to have little dialogue, as the film is only 5 minutes long. In addition, we have a limited number of characters and only 1 main protagonist, which means that dialogue is not as important to keep everyone engaged in the film. By focusing on the visual aspects, it allows us to make our film unique and intriguing.

From this question, we learned that a vast majority of our audience are interested in a short film that carries a strong message. As a team, we have put careful thought into what we want our message to convey to the audience. On the other hand, our audience least want a light hearted gratification from our film.

In terms of the minor tasks, we are planning on creating an Instagram social media page. As the majority of our audience find out about upcoming films from social media apps like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, it makes it easier for them to interact with each post; sharing, liking and commenting. Social media also allows the audience to contact us and send messages. Even though 28.6% of the audience find out from ads on Youtube, it poses as a more difficult task to achieve, as most of the ads are paid.

These set of results was unpredicted for us, as most of our audience grew up in the city. However, we would like our protagonist to feel empty and isolated, so the countryside setting would be perfect for us. This could also pose as an inconvenience for us, as we all live in the big city and we may need to travel out into the countryside.
